Community Come Out for RehabCare Open Day

05/08/2014

RehabCare Resource Centre & Residential services in Knocklofty started the bank holiday weekend early with a community day on Thursday last (31 July) when family and friends of the people who use the service along with neighbours and people from the local community went along to their annual summer BBQ .

After strolling around the gardens to see the animals and rare breed poultry that the people who use the services look after (including horses doing dressage), mouths were watering as people tucked into a Pig on a Spit donated by Hotel Minella, with hotel owner John Nallen as head chef on the day! With both young and old in attendance at the event, there was something for everyone with a kids corner, a treasure hunt, free zumba classes, vintage cars on display, drama performances, and a free pottery class.

Some people took the opportunity to stock up on some tasty home produce, organic vegetables, free-range hen and duck eggs as well as some of the beautiful crafts made in the centre and even some guinea pigs on offer! Special guests on the day included the centre’s two lamas,  Milky Way & Coco!

The resource centre provides services for 17 people with physical and intellectual disabilities. They are supported to increase their independence and confidence, enabling them to improve their quality of lifethrough person-centred planning. There are a range of both one-to-one and group activities and programmes provided in the centre  such as art and crafts, drama, horticulture, leisure activities, cookery, independent living skills, sports, dancing, group excursions and many more.

Miriam Cleary, Community Services Manager, RehabCare said, “We had a great day and were delighted that so many people joined us to see firsthand how unique a service we are in our rural setting and how much of a community dynamic we have. It was great to see so many of the local organisations and businesses that support us here today including parents, families, SOLAS, Clonmel Tourism, Hotel Minella, Ely’s Centra, Grange Community Hall, Glen View Lounge, Supervalu, Supported Employment South Tipp, Hill View Sports Centre, our local councillors, the Lord Mayor and Mattie McGrath TD.”
