Entertaining Variety Show Hosted by RehabCare and The Linenhall Theatre

04/06/2015 Entertaining Variety Show Hosted by RehabCare and The Linenhall Theatre

The Linenhall Theatre and Art Gallery in Castlebar recently hosted a Variety Show of Drama and Verse alongside an Art Exhibition, in collaboration with RehabCare.  There were lively performances by staff and people who use the services in RehabCare. Everyone involved really enjoyed the experience of performing and the audience that attended on the day was thoroughly entertained.

One of the most interesting pieces in the show was an original adaptation of the John Millington Synge poem, Danny. Other poems and scripts were delivered with humour, such as, The Matchmaker and there was also a Prime Time Special set in Mayo, mimicking well-known Mayo TDs and leaders. The Art Exhibition showcased the work that the art groups have been doing over the last year in RehabCare. There were many picturesque landscapes and local scenes on display, which had been created using acrylics and poster paints.

Lorraine Gibbons, Community Services Manager, RehabCare Castlebar thanked The Linenhall for their welcome, generosity and space and said that equality issues were very apparent in this matinee performance.  “The people who use our services in RehabCare experienced a great feeling of reward and achievement by being involved in this successful show.  This initiative of using drama and performance for adults using our services at RehabCare has many advantages and everyone involved really enjoyed themselves.”

John Griffin, a member of staff with RehabCare who directed the variety show remarked, “The arts and creative media offer special opportunities when it comes to development and communicating and also offers an opportunity to engage in art for art’s sake and to draw inspiration from your life and from that well that makes your ideas so worthwhile.” RehabCare is already planning a Christmas variety performance and would welcome public opinion and offers of support to help in developing their ideas. Mayo County Council has already been in touch with the group and has been encouraging their suggestions and offering of help.

If you have any ideas that you think might help RehabCare or if you would like to offer sponsorship that might benefit the group in developing the idea of theatre and arts for people with disabilities, please contact Lorraine Gibbons, Community Services Manager, RehabCare Castlebar on 094 904 3055.
