There was a sporting hero’s welcome for athletes from RehabCare on their return from the recent Special Olympic National Finals in Limerick. Fifteen people who use the RehabCare services were honoured for their outstanding achievements at the games. Between them they brought home nine gold, ten silver and six bronze medals as well as four ribbons from five disciplines including bowling, bocce, kayaking, table tennis and athletics. Parents, family, friends, joined staff and others who use RehabCare’s services to celebrate their medal haul!

Rachael Gielty  who won a Silver and bronze medal in the bowling events  said, “It’s brilliant to come home to a hero’s welcome like that. I’m so happy I can’t stop smiling”.

The medal haul included:
Bowling Singles, Doubles and Team events: Rachel Gielty (Silver and Bronze medals), Cathal Finn (Silver medal and a fifth ribbon), Martin Murray (Silver and Bronze medal), Aoife Keane (Bronze medal and a fourth ribbon), Thomas Campbell (Gold medal and eight ribbon), Kiera Joyce (Gold and Bronze medals)
Bocce: Cathriona McLaughlin (Gold medal in singles and a silver medal for the team event)
Athletics: Aoife Beston (Two gold medals), Niamh Waldron (Silver and Bronze medal)
Kayaking : Sean Sammon (Gold and Silver medals), Mary C Reilly (Two Silver medals), Bridget Walsh (Gold and Bronze medals), Deirdre Garvin (Silver medal and a ribbon), and Lisa Murray.
Tabletennis: Paul McEllin (Gold and Silver medals)

Lorraine Gibbons, Manager, RehabCare said, “We are so proud of all of our athletes. They have trained so hard over the last few months and it’s great to see that the commitment of the athletes and their bowling coach, Bernadette Coen   paid off.”
Over 80 people use the RehabCare services in their resource centre’s on Breaffy Road and on Spencer Street which are provided in partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE).  The person-centered activities include IT, arts, cookery, personal and self development, and independent living skills. RehabCare also provide PA (personal assistant) services, an outreach service, supported accommodation and a service for early school leavers in Castlebar.
