Laois Businesses Open Their Door to RehabCare for Job Shadow Day

06/05/2015 Laois Businesses Open Their Door to RehabCare for Job Shadow Day

National Job Shadow Day (Wednesday 22nd April) gave people who use the services provided by RehabCare in Portlaoise the chance to job shadow people in the local businesses. Job Shadow Day, organised by the Irish Association of Supported Employment, is an initiative which gives people with disabilities the opportunity to shadow workers from different businesses to get a taste of working in the professional workplace.

Michelle Coonan really enjoyed her day in Laois Library reporting that the staff in the library were very friendly. Darragh Lanham spent the day in Telfords Mountrath while Jamie Murray learned how a charity shop is run when he went to St Vincent de Paul Shop in Portlaoise. Paula Flanagan got to experience the world of retail when she job shadowed staff in Heatons Portlaoise.

Sean Mills and Niamh Tynan got to experience life in a Government Department when they shadowed staff in the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in Portlaoise. Niamh said, “I was so nervous before I started. Now that I’ve completed it and I’ve gotten on so well I feel very proud of myself and would love to go back and work with them.” Staff in the Department were very impressed with Sean and Niamh saying that they themselves learned alot from the day. They gave them small gifts to remember their day and look forward to opening their doors again next year for Job Shadow Day.
In partnership with the Health Service Executive, the RehabCare resource centre in Portlaoise provides a wide range of high-quality person-centred services activities for over 40 people with disabilities.
