Longford Job Shadow Day

13/06/2014 Longford Job Shadow Day

Job Shadow Day 2014 gave jobseekers with a disability to team up with a company mentor for the day and experience their working day. Everyone who got involved opened their doors to ability and inclusion. It was a great opportunity to promote inclusive business and employment. The service users from RehabCare’s day resource centre based in Red leaf house in Longford participated in The Irish Association of Supported Employment’s recent Job shadow day. The Longford Rose Kathleen Mahon presented plaques to the local businesses/employers and certificates to the service users who participated.

Mary Farrell joined ‘The barber’s shop’ and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Declan Cunningham and James Mahon got the opportunity to see what a day in the life of a guard in Longford Town is like when they shadowed a local Garda Station. Elaine Hudson spent the day with Longford Tidy Towns whilst Ciara Bartels shadowed staff in Minard Day Nursery. Thomas McGoey took to the local airwaves when he shadowed staff at Shannonside radio while David Ward and Helena Corrigan got the chance to hang out with lots of gorgeous animals at the ISPCA. Declan Cunningham said “I loved every minute of it. It was really enjoyable and rewarding. The Guards were really good to us and showed us lots of things that they do in their jobs.”

The Job Shadow Day initiative is a unique opportunity that benefits a range of individuals in the community from the people who get the opportunity to see what a typical working day is like in a local business to the local businesses that generously opened their doors and take part. It gives people with disabilities an insight into a real working day and can give service users from RehabCare the confidence to apply for employment or work experience in their area of choice.

Longford RehabCare and The Irish Association of Supported Employment would like to thank all the people who made this initiative happen, the staff at An Garda Siochana, Longford Tidy Towns, Kathleen Hickey at The Barber’ Shop, Longford I.S.P.C.A., Shannonside Radio and Veronica and staff at Minard Day Nursery.
