Presidents Award for James

12/02/2013 Presidents Award for James

After two years of volunteering and learning new skills, James Mahon from Newtown Forbes was awarded a silver Gaisce Award, the President’s Award. He was presented with his award by local footballer Paddy Dowd at a recent celebration in the RehabCare resource centre. James who attends the centre in the Redleaf building in Townspark, Longford town, decided to take on the challenge of the country most prestigious and respected individual award.

James had to complete four main challenges to achieve his silver award. These included 26 weeks of community involvement, learning a new personal skill and physical recreation. For his community involvement James went to the local ISPCA in Kenagh to walk a dog once a week while for his personal skill he learnt to play the piano. Improving his swimming was the challenge he set himself for the physical recreation section with weekly sessions in the pool of the Longford Arms Hotel.

For the final section of the award, James had to plan and undertake a three day adventure that covered a minimum distance of 190km. James researched, planned, prepared, and more importantly, completed a cycle with his sister Ann in Lough Borg Derg in Dromod. They both camped out overnight and cooked on the campfire.
Achieving the silver Gaisce Award has broadened James’ horizon and he has his sights set on the gold Gaisce Award which he hopes to achieve by next year. It’s a tough challenge but James is looking forward to it!
