Sligo is getting ready to welcome a host of UK soap stars and Irish sporting and entertainment celebrities this summer as RehabCare and the UK charity Once Upon A Smile join forces for an All-Star fundraising weekend on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August. A weekend of events has been organised to raise funds to support the development of a new RehabCare resource centre for people with disabilities from Sligo and surrounding areas. The highlight of the weekend will see twenty of the UK’s top soap personalities from Emmerdale, Eastenders, Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road battle against a team of well-known Irish personalities at a charity soccer match in McSharry Park, Sligo on Sunday 25th of August, with kick-off at 1.30pm.

The RehabCare All-Star selection will include Stephen Byrne, presenter on RTÉ Two’s TwoTube and also on The Voice of Ireland; Paul Walsh, lead singer with top Irish band Royseven; Maclean Burke, who plays Damien Halpin in Ireland’s top rated soap Fair City. Former Sligo Rovers Captain, Conor O’ Grady, and RTÉ MNS pundit and former League of Ireland player Alan Cawley will also be taking part. The RehabCare All-Star Selection will be strengthened further by other big name “signings” to be announced in the coming weeks.

In addition to revealing their All-Star line-up, RehabCare have also announced the fundraising event’s Sponsor Partners. Says, Eamonn Wheeler, Community Services Manager, RehabCare, “We’re really delighted that so many local Sligo businesses have generously offered their support to this unique fundraising initiative. The weekend promises to be a fun and of course, will be of huge benefit to the people with disabilities who attend RehabCare services in the Sligo.”

Tony Discipline (EastEnders) and Anthony Quinlan (Hollyoaks) are among the twenty UK soap stars set to travel to Sligo. According to Dan Jillings, a former star of Coronation Street and The Bill and a founding member of the UK charity Once Upon a Smile, excitement is building for the event. “This is our first time to take the charity’s work outside the UK and we are delighted to partner with RehabCare. The guys are really looking forward to meeting the Irish soap fans and we will have an All Star line-up travelling to Sligo.”

The UK soap stars will arrive in Sligo on Saturday 24th of August and will visit some of the local RehabCare services to see first-hand the work of RehabCare in Sligo. That evening, the soap stars will meet and greet lucky fans at a VIP reception in the award-winning Velvet Rooms in Bridge Street, Sligo. Ticket details will be available shortly from The Velvet Rooms so keep an eye on their Facebook page for the announcement.

Tickets for the All-Star soccer match, which kicks off in McSharry Park on Sunday, 25th August at 1.30pm, will be available from Thursday, 11th of July at RehabCare Sligo, The Sligo Weekender, Se7en in Quayside shopping centre, and Jako Sports. A limited number of family tickets are available. Priced at €25, the family ticket admits 2 adults and 2 children under 16. Adult tickets for the soccer match are priced at €10 per person and under 16’s can purchase their tickets for this all-star event for just €5. Under 16s must have adult supervision.

A busy fundraising weekend will conclude with a black-tie gala evening at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ballincar, Sligo in the company of all twenty UK soap stars. RTÉ’s Eileen Magnier will be master of ceremonies on the night, which begins with a drinks reception at 7.30pm. This is followed by dinner and dancing into the late hours with music by premier band, Deja Groove.

Speaking of the gala dinner, Eamonn Wheeler says, “Excitement is definitely building in resource centre. Everyone is looking forward to a fantastic night with the stars and people will be also supporting a very worthy cause. The soap stars will be our guests on the night and are looking forward to meeting people at this glamourous event. The guys are bringing their tuxedos, so dress to impress.”

A limited amount of tickets are still available from RehabCare Sligo (071 917 0045) for the black-tie gala and are priced at €50 per person. People are encouraged to secure their ticket as soon as possible.
