RehabCare Ballyfermot’s Bike Club Adventure

20/11/2013 RehabCare Ballyfermot’s Bike Club Adventure

Programme Facilitator Donna Hughes and six people who use the service in Ballyfermot set out on a cycling adventure recently (Nov 12th) on bikes they had purchased with money they had won for a Rehab Group Innovation award for a previous project.

After months of training and learning all about cycling and about bikes, they set off on their trip. They cycled 110 kilometres around Dublin between them in just under four hours. They cycled as far as the o2 arena beside Dublin Port and back again to Ballyfermot. Families, friends and members of the local community who knew about their event came out and stood along the route to cheer them on. There were some very tired bodies in the centre the next day! They hit their fundraising target and raised over €500 thanks to everyone’s generous donations. The money raised will go towards purchasing heavy duty bike locks for all the bikes with the remainder going towards the next trip (which will hopefully include a leisurely lunch!)

The fitness levels of everyone involved really increased and everyone is now enjoying a few weeks of well deserved rest. They are also staying off the roads in this cold weather as they want to avoid slippery roads and black ice.

The Bike Club will be doing a full month of road safety in January and hope to be back out on their bikes in February.
