UK Soap Stars Play Their Part in Aid of RehabCare Sligo!

Twenty of the UK’s most popular soap stars from Coronation Street, Eastenders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and other soaps are coming to Sligo on the weekend of 24th/ 25th August 2013 to raise funds for a RehabCare in Sligo.

The organisation who work with people with disabilities in the county are joining forces with UK charity Once Upon A Smile, to raise funds to support the development of a new RehabCare resource centre for people with disabilities in Sligo. It promises to be a weekend of Fun, Football and Fundraising!
 

Award-winning actor Danny Miller who is most famous for his role as Arron in Emmerdale, is a founding member of Once Upon a Smile. He said, “I am looking forward to coming to Ireland and meeting the fantastic people and helping raise money for RehabCare. I am buzzing about the game and it’s all for a great cause!”
 

The soap stars will arrive in Sligo on Saturday 24th August and they will get to sample the Sligo hospitality as well as visit some of the local RehabCare services to see at first hand the work of RehabCare in Sligo. Later that evening the Velvet Rooms in Bridge Street Sligo will host a fundraising night where some lucky soap fans will get to meet and greet the stars at a VIP reception. Ticket details will be available soon from the Velvet Rooms.


The highlight of the weekends fundraising activities will be a charity soccer match which will take place on Sunday 25th August in Mc Sherry Park at Sligo, kicking off at 1.30pm. The UK Soap Star Selection will battle it out on the field against a Rehab All-star Selection which will include names from the Irish entertainment world and a selection of ex-sporting heroes. The game looks set to be one the highlights of the 2013 summer in Sligo and promises to be the perfect family day out with the chance to see some famous faces in action. Tickets are €10 per adult and €5 for U16’s and is available from RehabCare in Sligo, The Sligo Weekender, SeVen in Quayside Shopping Centre and Jako Sports. A special limited number of family tickets (2a & 2c) will be available for €25.

After the soccer game on Sunday night the stars will be the guests at the glamorous RehabCare Gala Fundraising Dinner to be held in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Sligo. The dinner begins at 7.30pm and will give everybody the chance to mingle with the teams and meet the stars, while dining in style and supporting a very worthy cause.  There are a limited amount of tickets available from RehabCare in Sligo, priced at €50, so people are being encouraged to secure their ticket as soon as possible.

In Sligo, in partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE), RehabCare provides a wide range of high-quality services to people with disabilities and others who are marginalised. The focus is on supporting people to identify and achieve life goals, obtain a better quality of life, and enjoy new experiences such as learning a new skill, securing employment, meeting people and living independently.

The resource centre and day service, currently at Aughamore Far, supports 66 people, adopting a person-centred approach and focuses on building strong links with the community through attending events and in participating in events and activities. Programmes provided include computer classes, drama, cookery, a jobs club, advocacy and social skills. RehabCare also provides accommodation services for 18 people in Sligo, which includes supported accommodation and independent living support assistance with cooking, budgeting, shopping, cleaning and personal care while also enabling people to avail of opportunities to develop their own leisure interests and social networks.
