Meet Audrey McKay

Audrey McKay
Audrey McKay - Cork

I really like that the staff in the centre notice what I am wearing as it is something that is really important to me and I put thought and effort into it.

I am part of a drama group. In 2012 we performed in the International Performing Arts Festival and I earned a medal for my part in Monty Python's ‘Dead Indian’.

I have started to go to the cinema with friends from the centre without the staff.

I live with my mum and dad in Dripsey, Co. Cork. My mum comes on the bus with me three days a week when I go to the centre in Bruach on Bachelors Quay in Cork city. I really like when my mum goes shopping and buys things that she knows I will like, especially shoes and jewellery! I always match my jewellery to my clothes. I really like that the staff in Bruach notice what I am wearing as it is something that is really important to me and I put thought and effort into. I also really like watching Coronation Street with my mum.

I am part of a drama group – we rehearse twice a week and we have done performances in Bruach and other centres. In 2012 we performed in the International Performing Arts Festival and I earned a medal for my part in Monty Python's Dead Indian. I played one of the two Indians and I made my costume in arts and crafts class. I made a head-dress with feathers in pink and purple as they are two of my favorite colours. I really enjoy arts and crafts class, especially when we make things that I can take home for myself and my mum.

My friend Mary is showing me how to play Boccia in Bruach and I am starting to get very good at it. I have started to go to the cinema with friends from the centre without the staff. I like this as the cinema is next door to the centre and I know staff are near by. I really like movies especially animation, comedies and musicals. We also have a CD club in the centre and I listen to other people’s music and share my favourite music with them. I love Elvis Presley!

My favorite programme in Bruach is the women’s group. I don’t usually like to talk in groups but I like to listen to other people. I sometimes speak in this group and I like that the other women give me the time I need to decide what I want to say and to say it.

I like to try new things and do activities outside of the centre. Since I started my personal action plan (PCP) I have joined the CD club, I did a charity walk and breakfast morning for the Walk In My Shoes fundraising event. I started going to a community garden project in Cork called The Basement where I worked on an art project called Summer Leaves. Our work was in an exhibition last September. Staff from the Bruach centre come with me when I do things outside of the centre as I like to try new things but I also like to have someone I know with me.
